Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a spoon. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but read more laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer extent of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping defense.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck with devastating force, ravaging entire towns in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Thousands were left beneath wreckage, their fate uncertain. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to grapple a future forever scarred.
Rescue operations sprang into action, battling against time and treacherous conditions to rescue those still missing. The world watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering prayers to the stricken population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was getting ready out the door, I trippedover and gracefully all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally late for a very important appointment.
I sweating. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
